NIGERIA: NNPC speaks on subsidy removal announcement by the incoming government

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) says the decision to remove subsidy on petrol, popularly called fuel, by President Bola Tinubu is for the betterment of the economy and entirety of the country.

The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), NNPC Ltd, Mele Kyari, made this known at the NNPC Ltd. Towers in Abuja while briefing journalists late Monday night after the pronouncement by the president.

According to reports, Mr Tinubu, at his inauguration as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Monday, said the subsidy regime will end with the commencement of his administration.

Mr Kyari, while addressing journalists said the removal of the subsidy which had been a burden on NNPC’s cash flow, would free up funds to enable optimal operations in the company.

“Subsidy has been a major challenge for NNPC’s continuous operations. We believe that this will free up resources to enable us continue to do great work and function as a commercial entity, we welcome this development,’’ he said.

Reacting to queues and scarcity already being experienced, the GCO assured Nigerians of a sufficient supply of products particularly petrol, adding that the company has over 30 days of petrol storage and supply.

“There is no reason to panic, we understand that people will be scared of potential changes in price of petrol, that is not enough for people to rush to buy more than they need,’’ he added.

He however appealed to Nigerians not to be scared or indulge in panic buying.

WhatsApp New policies for business and SME's 2023

WhatsApp’s new pricing policy for business messaging, effective from Thursday, is likely to trigger a sharp increase in marketing costs for millions of small and medium enterprises that rely on the popular communication platform, according to a number of business owners who spoke to ET.

Several are now scouting for alternative avenues to connect with customers directly, as the Meta-owned company presses ahead with furthering “monetisation” of WhatsApp for Business.

The new rates will require businesses to pay different prices based on the nature of communication. They will now be charged Rs 0.3082 for every utility message, while marketing messages will cost Rs 0.7265. Previously, WhatsApp charged a flat Rs 0.48 per conversation. The pricing for authentication messages will be announced later, the company said on its website.

“The price increase certainly impacts us. We are internally seeing how we can minimise conversations and make them more effective," said Pallavi Utagi, founder and chief executive of SuperBottoms that sells ecofriendly and reusable cloth diapers.

Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg has previously pointed to business messaging as being a “major monetisation opportunity.”

PLACES: This is Gembu in Taraba State, Nigeria

Gembu is a town on the Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State of Nigeria.

It is the headquarters of Sardauna Local Government Area (formerly "Mambilla" LGA) in Taraba State.

Sitting at an average elevation of about 1,348 meters (4,423 ft) above sea level, it is among the highest elevated towns in Nigeria.

It is believed that the first inhabitants of the entire Mambilla Region were the descendants of the Bantu ancestors, who are known to have inhabited the region by 5000 BC (Zeitlyn & Connell, 2003). They constitute the Bantu people who stayed home in the Mambilla region after the Bantu expansion across Africa between 3000 BC and 1500 AD. These are represented in this town by the Mambilla people who founded it.

The Mambila people make up the largest single ethnic group in the town, followed by the Kaka, and then the Hausa-Fulanis, the main cattle rearers of the plateau. The Mambilla people, the denizens of this Plateau, were the only inhabitants of the town until colonial rule set in. They are thought to have been in this region for the past five millennia.

Although in the past, roads leading to Bommi Town (Gembu) on the Mambilla Plateau were poorly maintained and travelling to the town from other parts of Nigeria was difficult, the transport problems improved radically with the construction of the Mambilla Highway linking the plateau to the lowlands west and north of it. The road works begun by the Taraba State Government in 2012 have added a greater prospect of ease of communication with the rest of Nigeria.

It is believed to be the coldest place in Nigeria.

Visit Gembu today and get an experience of a life-time feeling like you have traveled out of Nigeria probably to Russia, Canada or any other cooler regions of the world.
